Trevejo is a small village in the Sierra de Gata, with less than a dozen inhabitants, which has almost miraculously maintained its medieval village physiognomy over the centuries. It has maintained its vernacular architecture, its genuine image and its secular beauty and this makes it a true jewel of the north of Extremadura. It has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Historic Centre. The walls of the houses, the cobblestones of the streets, the lintels of the doorways and windows, the staircases and the religious buildings offer different styles of construction using the same material. At the same time, most of the popular constructions show strong walls of masonry and cut stones. The roofs, covered almost entirely with warm Arabic tiles, provide the complex with a unique beauty that has been preserved to nowadays thanks to effort of its inhabitants. Trevejo represents the paradigm of Extremaduran mountain architecture. You can enjpy walking through its few streets, where you will find unexpected nooks and crannies and where elements of traditional architecture, such as stone steps at the doorways, rough wooden doors or roof overhangs, are mixed with older elements, most likely from the fortress, heraldic shields, pillars, inscriptions or ashlars, and with the plants that appear, beautifully cared for, adorning the streets, façades and fences. The town centre, with a high heritage and aesthetic value, is enhanced by the landscape values of Trevejo. From its streets you can enjoy one of the most impressive landscapes in the north of Extremadura. To get an idea of the scenic potential of this enclave, it is also necessary to visit some of its viewpoints, such as the one at the entrance to the village or the natural balconies at the side of the castle or at the hermitage.
