Sepúlveda

Ramón López Blázquez

Sepúlveda combines history, art, gastronomy, nature, and both intangible and living culture. Therefore, it is not too much of a stretch to define it as one of the most beautiful rooms of the so-called “largest living museum in the world”, that is, of Castilla y León.

Its alleyways and hidden nooks and crannies, along with the countless views and landscapes which can be admired from the town's many viewpoints, have all been immortalised by local and national artists, such as Lope Tablada and Ignacio Zuloaga, among many others.

Walking through the village's streets and passageways we are able to delve into its history and its enigmas, admire its Romanesque churches and stately buildings, and delight in its air, its light, its colours and its silence.

Taking a tour of Sepúlveda enables tourists, walkers, historians and dreamers alike to enjoy a unique experience thanks to the town's art, history, gastronomy, natural setting and immaterial and living culture.

Ramón López Blázquez
Mayor of Sepúlveda

Sepúlveda is a Medieval village of great beauty located in unique surroundings, close to the gorges from which spring the Caslilla and Duratón rivers. Strolling through its streets visitor can discover all the town's nooks and crannies, admiring its Romanesque churches - notably the Church of the Saviour (eleventh century), numerous emblazoned houses, the Arab wall (tenth century) and its seven gates, the beautiful Plaza de España and a variety of unique viewpoints enabling you to delight in the stunning surrounding landscape, home to the largest colony of griffon vultures in Europe.

Of special interest, too, are the Interpretation Centre for the Casa del Parque Natural de las Hoces, the Old Prison of Sepúlveda (16th century) and the Museum of the Fuero de Sepúlveda, considered the first Frontier Fuero, or municipal charter, and setting out a new model for repopulation.

To the town's history, art, and natural surroundings, we must of course add its cuisine: not for nothing is Sepúlveda known as the “Cathedral of Roasted Lamb,” although it also has a strong tradition of excellent bakery products.

The Fiesta de los Fueros, El Diablillo, The Seven Keys Amateur Theatre Contest, Holy Week, the Holy Bulls and other traditions keep local culture alive.

Walk, enjoy, taste, rest and feel: Sepúlveda will guarantee you a unique tourist experience.
