Mogarraz

Mª Soledad Álvarez Cascón

Mogarraz is a Historic-Artistic Site, located in the heart of the Natural Park of Las Batuecas and Sierra de Francia, Biosphere Reserve. Due to its natural isolation, MOGARRAZ has preserved its civilian and military architecture in perfect condition. It is a medieval village built and repopulated in the eleventh century by French settlers, from Gascony and Roussillon in particular, a provenance manifested in local surnames of Gallic origin. Its civil architecture of timber and stone has been perfectly preserved to this day. A particular highlight are its agricultural terraces, perfectly integrated into nature - drawing the attention of any visitor to the area. MOGARRAZ  preserves its folkloric, cultural and religious traditions on the carved lintels of its doors, where its history is spoken of in epigrams, and its religion, fears and hopes are depicted. Its craftsmanship is widely known throughout Spain and abroad, especially its jewellery, traditional costumes and rustic embroideries, whose commercialisation was made possible by our muleteers who carried the materials and finished products from one point to another along the Via de la Plata…

Mayor of Mogarraz

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all those visiting us, whatever the reason. If Mogarraz has one fundamental characteristic is it the warmth and hospitality of its people, who are sure to make your stay a very enjoyable one, not to mention our natural, aesthetic and culinary resources, all of which we place at your disposal. This is a peaceful place, where time appears not to have passed, yet whose traditions, art and history have nevertheless not got in the way of progress, which undoubtedly makes everyone's life subtly more comfortable. In any case, our particular way of being is deeply shaped by Nature and the struggle for survival in a mountainous place. The mighty rivers and mountains of the Sierra de Francia form the valleys where we live, sheltered and slightly cut off from it all, which makes for a somewhat anarchic approach to society, if by anarchic we understand individualist and not very gregarious. Curiously, this same character means that Mogarraz is actually very boisterous when it comes to its local festivals, taking great joy in folklore, dance, music and stories of enchanted mulberry trees, because is what lies at the heart of our essence.
