Miranda del Castañar

Quedarse prendado del hechizo de un pueblo medieval

Miranda del Castañar is located at the confluence of two rivers (Alagón and Francia), and stands proudly on a hill observing all the goings-on around it.

The old castle presides over the walled enclosure that houses coats of arms, alleyways, arches and carved stones that hold neighbourhood secrets and reveal their stories to curious travellers. Through its streets you can breathe the medieval history of the town that was.

Discover the layout of its streets - maybe Arab, maybe Jewish - and learn how out of necessity its inhabitants have thrived, sharing houses and storerooms and giving rise to the particular idiosyncrasy of this place, which can only be fully understood by talking to the locals, soaking up the architecture and listening to what the stones have to tell us.

Around Miranda, nature gets wilder as you move further from the inhabited centre - land that was once home to vineyards and olive groves is now given over to incredible forests of cork oaks, oaks and strawberry trees, making for one of the most unusual rural landscapes in Salamanca. The walker who ventures into its forests will also discover a great variety of Mediterranean flora, a diverse and abundant fauna and - if the climate is conducive - a great wealth of fungi.

There are two marked routes. The first, Rodales, is circular, and offers spectacular panoramas of the Sierra de Béjar/Candelario, in addition to the crops that historically represented the town's livelihood, the vine and the olive tree.

The other route, El camino de los prodigios, is one of the “Art in Nature Footpaths” of the Diputación de Salamanca and connects the towns of Miranda del Castañar and Villanueva del Conde. Throughout the route we can enjoy unbeatable views of the Peña de Francia, other villages of the Sierra de Francia and above all an impressive forest.

The urban and natural environment merge into a whole to offer the visitor an unforgettable experience.
